“A terrible accident during the filming of an independent western has turned fiction into a real tragedy. Shots fired by actor Alec Baldwin, 63, a well-known artist in the Hollywood industry, have ended the life of photography director Halyna Hutchins and have injured the director of the movie, Joel Souza.
It all happened in the middle of a scene during the filming of the movie ‘Rust’, in the state of New Mexico.
The circumstances of the shooting are still being investigated.
Real firearms are used often in movies but they tend to be loaded with blanks, cartridges that create an explosion but don’t fire an actual bullet.
It’s not the first time the world of movies has been involved in tragic accidents of this nature. Bruce Lee’s son, Brandon Lee, died when he was shot with a .44 Magnum gun while he was filming a deadly scene in the movie The Crow in 1993.”
This is an absolute tragedy.
No one should have to ever go through such a thing.
It is painful to hear about this.
Can you imagine how Alec feels?
He never expected the gun to cause any harm, much less be deadly.
First thing that went through my mind was: “is this a prank?”
It could be.
Until I saw all the major news outlet start reporting on it.
Then it started flooding my newsfeed.
Second thing I thought of was: “how does a prop gun kill someone?”
Prop guns don’t have projectiles loaded into it.
We call them blanks in the army.
They look like a real bullet, you load them into the gun as per normal.
But when you fire, nothing comes out.
There is heat, sound and air blasting out.
But no bullets or projectiles actually comes out.
The heat, sound and air is still dangerous though, when fired in close distance.
It must be really heart-wrenching and miserable for everyone on the set.
My heart goes out to everyone affected.
Alec, stay strong.
I loved him from 30 Rock.
He was an absolute genius in it.
I wish him all the best.
