China has passed an anti–food waste law that bans diners at restaurants from ordering more than they need. Filming or sharing videos of binge-eating, “mukbang”, are prohibited. No more absurd food wastage Tiktoks and challenges (at least in China).
I find it amazing that while other governments and law-makers are still debating on food wastage issues, the Chinese government can simply pass a law that literally sweeps across the nation and sends a powerful message to everyone in and out the country.
Yes, its probably too draconian, goes against the people’s wishes and makes it duller at parties and celebrations where “food abundance” are usually the norm in Chinese culture. But it is a great BIG step towards sustainability and really gets consumers to think twice before ordering or wasting food.
Don’t ask about enforcement. They literally have officers checking in randomly and issuing fines. I cannot imagine trying to enforce such a law in restaurants and eateries big and small all across China.
Perhaps a little too authoritarian, but it might also prove highly effective.
