Caught this nice infographic in my newsfeed a while back.
It shows clearly that Unicorns are populating well over the years.
A decade back, you would be scratching your head when I say “Unicorn” to refer to a company.
8 years ago, there were only a dozen Unicorns around.
Today, there are nearly 750 roaming the globe.
Singapore, one of the tiniest countries in the world, has 6 Unicorns.
Believe it or not, we have more than Hong Kong and same as Australia and Japan, with 6 each.
China has the largest stable of Unicorns now at 155.
But the undisputed leader is still USA with 378, although I do not suspect for very long.
As you can tell, growing a Unicorn is tough work and takes a long time, anywhere from 5–10 years.
So how to grow a Unicorn fast?
In short, if you are looking at just the numbers, here are the things you can do to give yourself a leg up.
- Be in Fintech or e-commerce
- Go to China or USA
- Have the top 10 VCs invest
- Be obsessive on growth
- Ride mega-trends
So many ways to chop and use the data.
So much to talk about.
More to come in a bit.
