Novak has been №1 for a record 355 weeks.
He ties with legends Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at 20 Grand Slam Titles.
Together, they are nicknamed “The Big Three” of tennis.
The Big Three have dominated tennis for the past decade or so.
He has 86 major titles under his belt.
The 4 major tennis tournaments that comprises a Grand Slam are:
Australian Open
French Open
Wimbledon
US Open
He could have gotten his 21st Grand Slam title and made tennis history.
If only he had taken a jab.
But he chose not to.
There was a lot of drama and uproar over his visa into Australia recently.
He was slated to join the Australian Open but Australia’s immigration authorities revoked his visa and denied him entry.
Some praised Australia for their steadfast and firm approach.
Some questioned why they were so heavy-handed.
Then again, hundreds of athletes had no issues and proceeded to play at the Australian Open.
Therein lies the question:
Was Novak being true to his beliefs or just plain stubborn?
So much talk about how he had a charity tennis tournament in Serbia that turned into a Covid super-spreader event.
And how he was deliberately falsifying details for his visa.
Not too sure if he is explicitly “anti-vax”, but his actions speaks plenty.
Clearly, even top-tier superstar athletes are not exempted from disagreeing with logic and science.
They did a survey and 71% of Australians think Novak should leave the country.
Rightfully.
Australians as a country and community, have endured harsh restrictions and lockdown measures.
They deserve better.
He knew about this way ahead of time.
Honestly, like what Nadal said “if Novak wanted to play, he would be playing”.
He chose not to.
It’s a choice he made very clear and there is nothing wrong with it.
Just that certain choices comes with consequences.
In this case, he would not be allowed to contend for his 21st Grand Slam.
