Mona Lisa

Ok here’s something you don’t hear very often and I’m certain you will be tickled once you know about it.

The Mona Lisa is one of the most sought after paintings in the world.

The Mona Lisa.

One of the most expensive painting in the world.

Painted by the legendary polymath Leonardo da Vinci.

But it was the fact that it was stolen in 1911 that really boosted its intrigue and value.

Vincenzo Peruggia, the ex-Louvre handyman who made off with the “Mona Lisa”, stole it in the most unsuspecting and lazy fashion ever.

This is how he did it.

“He waited until the Salon Carré, the wing in which da Vinci’s surprisingly small painting hung, was empty, and then he simply reached out, lifted the wooden panel off the wall, and carried it into a nearby service staircase. There, he wrapped the 30-by-21-inch painting in his smock, tucked it under his arm, and walked out.”

Vincenzo Peruggia

He was only caught 28 months later when he tried to sell it.

Why 28 months? Because the press and the rest of the world was still reeling over it and it was too “hot” to sell.

I just never quite realize that it was the fact that the Mona Lisa was stolen successfully in the most unassuming fashion, that gave it so much attention and value.

Unfortunately, such occurrences will never happen in modern times.
