Never be afraid to ask questions.

“I asked around 100 questions and they really helped me to clarify all my ideas before going out.”

That was what one of the winning teams actually said.

Startup Weekend Global was the most ambitious non-profit, multi-time zone project we ever did as volunteers.

More than 1700+ participants from 82 countries spanning 3 time zones and 9 days, hundreds of teams and ideas all culminating in an epic finals.

We had Renaud Visage, co-founder of Eventbrite, and Maelle Gavet, CEO of Techstars, open the event.

We had a mega line-up of rockstar mentors and judges to support the teams throughout their journey.

We were just happy that the participants and future change-makers were learning so much from Startup Weekend Global.

We entered the Metaverse and achieved so many milestones.

After Startup Weekend Global concluded in Nov, we thought it be interesting to hear from the winners and see what they thought of it.

In essence, these are the key points we learnt from the winning teams:

  1. They all didn’t expect to win and thus organically did their best, as much as they can.

Winning is good but it should not be the only goal. When you prioritise the problem, talk to customers and focus on making sure everyone in the team is doing their best in whatever they do, you give yourself the best chance of building something amazing.

2. They were all trying to solve real problems that they faced personally and it really meant something to them.

Don’t try to boil the ocean or solve world poverty. Many have tried, it won’t work. Focus on something you care personally you would be able to relate to it more accurately. People can see that, and it matters.

3. They were able to demonstrate clearly what they want to solve and explain to the judges well.

All the work in the world and the most brilliant idea is useless if you cannot explain it well and get others to understand you.

I sincerely hope that this kickstarts all their amazing entrepreneurial journeys and I look forward to hearing great news from every participant who was a part of Startup Weekend Global.

Carpe Diem!
