Mayor Oscar Ramirez was tied to a tree and questioned after he failed to deliver on his campaign promises.
The city of Frontera Comalapa was stranded without water for a week and residents decided to hold the Mayor accountable.
Literally.
They held him up against a tree and demanded answers from him.
Not exactly sure how it ended, but did it seem reasonable or overboard?
Can you imagine having no water for a day?
This is a week and life is already hard in Mexico.
My contention is this:
If we did this to every leader or boss, will it truly make them more accountable?
Or will it take us back decades of progress and advancements?
Will it make them more accountable or afraid of accountability?
Short-term, you might get what you want and force a response.
Perhaps the long-term effect is that no one would want be leading anymore for fear of harsh retaliations?
Where do we draw the line and encourage accountability while balancing the repercussions?
Maybe we cannot have absolute accountability, but being a little more transparent, upfront and communicative with his people could have prevented this tree-tying fiasco.
So leaders, startup founders and bosses reading this, remember that accountability is a muscle.
Train it hard everyday and if you don’t, it will atrophy as all muscles do.
