150,000 Messi shirts were sold in just seven minutes.
Snaking queues at all of PSG merchandise locations.
That was right after his move to PSG was made official.
More than 830,000 jerseys were sold in the first 24 hours.
PSG have earned £100 million (USD 140m) from Messi shirts alone in just a week.
PSG is anticipating selling 2.5 million Messi shirts over the course of the season.
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the Messi Effect.
Of course the kit manufacturer Nike takes a cut and PSG won’t get all the profits.
But you want to know who the real winner is?
Michael Jordan.
Yup, the Basketball GOAT.
Chicago Bulls legend Jordan takes 5% for each shirt sold.
I don’t know how he or Nike managed to make that happen, but the Jordan Brand has been making the PSG kit since the last season.
I guess Jordan is one happy man.
Or rather, an astute marketer who knows how to play the game and partner with the right brands, at the right time.
His brilliance really isn’t just limited to cool moves and winning championships on the court, but outside of it too.
So founders, remember this, not everything has to be a clear win at first glance.
Sometimes, aiming for the long game and being extraordinarily patient is better than going for the low hanging fruit.
Oh Messi has a $41m annual salary and a cool $30m signing bonus.
I guess he is cool even if none of the moolah from the jerseys and merch sales goes to him.
