Theatre or Sport?

Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury

One is a talented, notorious Youtuber turned boxer.

The other is an unbeaten professional boxer and the younger brother of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

Jake Paul will face off Tommy Fury in Dec for a proper boxing match.

I am not sure how it will turn out, but Tommy seems to be a pretty decent pro boxer who literally box for a living.

Jake is a marketing genius and a talented content creator.

His antics are wild and has gotten him considerable riches, along with the hate and ire lately.

He was unbeaten in all four of his boxing fights since he turned pro.

In all his matches, Jake has yet to fight a fellow boxer, with his previous four opponents including another YouTuber, a retired NBA player and two UFC fighters in their late 30s.

Tommy, however, is unbeaten in seven fights since turning professional in December 2018.

I am just afraid this theatre will turn into a disaster for one party.

Boxing is a really brutal sport and it can end badly if you are not ready for it.

I am certain both parties will stand to benefit financially but it sends a wrong message to everyone out there.

You cannot treat such dangerous blood sport as a game.

Sure the money is great and the “entertainment” factor is tremendous, but the repercussions can be fatal, if not debilitating.

Either way, you have to give it to Jake, who has a uncanny penchant for hyping up things and creating a marketing tornado in everything he does.

That is a skill not many has and not many can do.

Millions will be tuning in to watch the fight.

Hundreds of millions will be made just on that one fight card alone.

That’s entire ecosystem of events, sales, ticketing, ringside staff that will have jobs and rent paid.

Gotta respect that.

And to be honest, this fight might very have paid Tommy a lot more than his usual pro fights who arguably would be less hyped and have a much lower viewership.

Man, the money and fame makes me want to turn pro and start challenging random people to a boxing match. =)

Do you agree that this is more theatre than sport?
