Walking your crabs

House of Seafood is great for their seafood but even better for their marketing antics.

You probably heard the news.

In the last few months, they have managed to:

  1. Walk their crabs (literally) and share the pictures on social media
  2. Chaotic long lines and waiting hours at their restaurant during Father’s day
  3. CEO going on livestream apologizing

They also had a claw machine to pull out live crabs back in 2019.

That raised a lot of furor and controversies.

People complained that it was cruel and unnecessary.

Sounds crazy, but its all true.

Then again, considering for a second that all this might be a great way to position yourself and get more attention to your brand, it might have made sense in the end.

They say all publicity is good publicity, even bad publicity (sometimes).

I wanted to point out a few things:

  1. When you made a mistake, acknowledge and admit your mistake.

Do not try to squirm, be upfront and face the music.

People will be forgiving in general.

Their memories are short.

Overall, people are cruel and brutal on the internet, but it peaks quickly and dies off quickly too.

2. Creativity is the new currency, but do not overdo!

Not every idea, however good it may seem when you first thought of it, will be a strike.

There will be some that fall flat or worse, have a bad fallout.

Do a quick pro and con assessment and consider the potential damages on social media.

Be prepared for backlash and do not, at all cost, fight the angry mob head-on.

Unless you are Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos, you will lose.
