“Federer has spent almost 75 percent of his life on the tour, a place where he achieved so much and has experienced everything.”
“Turning 40, it’s like my life has gone by on the tour. I’ve enjoyed so many moments, I’ve had some tough moments, of course. I’ve been tired. I was hurt. I was sick. I’ve played with all sorts of issues.”
It is hard to imagine Federer quitting the world of Tennis, but nothing beats father time. Sooner or later, Federer has to hang his cape and turn away from a sport that he has dominated for decades and achieved so much.
Reflecting on Federer’s amazing career, I have to ask: when do you know when to quit?
It is a question that is both difficult to answer and easy to mess up. The act of quitting and ending your illustrious career signals defeat, failure and the media will typically portray it as a fall from grace.
However, it could also mean knowing yourself, mastery over oneself and a keen understanding on charting the next chapter of your life. That signals foresight and maturity.
If you extrapolate to starting up, when do founders know when to quit? When we run out of runway or when we simply cannot get product-market fit? This is a tough, painful question that we all face at some point in our careers.
