The Old to New.

You probably heard of Xiaomi’s new logo. Bet most of you didn’t even noticed the difference when it launched. Perhaps it was designed specifically to be subtle yet sophisticated. But that unnoticeable tweak was rumored to have cost Xiaomi a whopping $300k!

Just imagine the amount of research, due diligence, stakeholders they have to interview and the hours of meetings to brainstorm and discuss ideas.

“In a launch video (below), designer Kenya Hara claims that the new logo “is not just a simple design of the shape,” but it in fact an “encapsulation of Xiaomi’s inner spirit”. In fact, the logo is intended to convey the essence of a single word: Alive.”

No you are not lousy, you just don’t have a compelling enough story.

Moral of the story? Spend 1 hour on the logo, 1000 hours on the narrative!

To all my prospective founders out there, don’t spend months languishing over your logo or fonts, focus on the why. Let people understand why you do what you do, why the problem is worth solving and let the story sell itself.

Sure, the visuals help strike a good first impression, but its the story and how engaging, relevant, meaningful and rapturing it is that will sell better.

Work. On. Your. Narrative.
